One morning I forgot myself and as I was approaching my exit I had a split-second of panic. When I was coming up to that interchange, I always had it in the manual mode so I could step it down the requisite 2 or 3 gears in a heck of a hurry. When I bought Ginger, my red, Club edition 2015 NC with PRHT and AT, my commute included a 270-degree freeway exit. By the way, the automatic is imbued with adaptive artificial intelligence. If the die-hard, skeptics/purists have still left you wondering, consider this: The Miata AT gives you three options, moving the shift lever to the manual slot, so you can get the visceral kick of shoving the transmission into higher and lower gears the paddle shifters, that allow you at any time to select a higher or lower gear without taking your hands off the steering wheel or letting your car shift for itself. However, on balance I can definitely recommend the automatic and would buy the same again. It usually happening when slowing down for traffic signals. For example, the display may may show 3 but as soon as you touch the throttle you find it is in 2. When slowing down (below about 10mph) you sometimes don't know what gear you're in. (It also means I can be lazy and enter a corner in a higher gear knowing that it is safe and easy to down shift.)įor me there is only one downside to the automatic. This means I can go faster into a corner without the worry that it may wind up, because if necessary I can down shift quickly and in control. I can change gears without taking my hands off the steering wheel. When driving hard in my opinion the automatic is better. It downshifts much faster than a manual transmission although the upshift (less important) is a little slower. The automatic transmission can be used in "manual" mode by using the paddles on the steering wheel to change gear. I learned to drive on my father's old Wolseley which had non working synchromesh. When I went to see it at the dealer, I nearly walked away because I am a die hard clutch guy. I own a 2006 NC automatic which I bought in 2009. We have not driven the car in the winter since 2003. We bought the vehicle new in 2002 and it currently has 63,3XX miles. Well, my wife has decided it is time to part with her 02 Protege 5. I know this will most likely never sell here, but I figured it's free to post and worth a shot
